Is real time indexing finally here?

Everytime I purchase a newer computer I think I am getting one-step closer to no-wait, real time computing. I remember when I upgraded from an xt to the newest processor, the 386. I opened one of my favorite games called asteroids and watched all of the avatars go flying by at breakneck speed.

Well, we are witnessing the same revolution in indexing technology. Last year, we saw the appearance of PubSubHubbub, a simple publish/subscribe protocol for Atom and RSS. PubSubHubBub, or PuSH,  provides real-time notifications to subscribers of content when there is new content or updates being made.

Recently Google announced it is developing a system that will enable web publishers of any size to automatically submit new content to Google for indexing within seconds of that content being published.

The Advantages of a Real Time Google Index

A leading analyst with Google commented:

PuSH is much more computationally efficient for Google but Slatkin says that even more important is the impact of such a move for small publishers. Right now many small sites get visited by Google maybe once a week. With a PuSH system in place, they would be able to get their content to Google automatically right away.”

“A richer, faster, more efficient internet would be good for everyone, but the benefits in search wouldn’t be limited to Google, either. The PubSubHubbub is an open protocol and the feeds would be as visible to Yahoo and Bing as they would be to Google.”

Without getting to techie here, when fresh content is posted PuSH sends a ping to a hub and this hub alerts subscribers to the new content. Friendfeed.com, a content sharing site, uses PuSH technology. When content is posted, it shows up on friend feed within 6 seconds.

WordPress.com just announced that its 10.5 million blogs will be adding PuSH capabilities. Typepad is PuSH capable and WordPress.org , which offers a downloadable version of their blog, offers a PuSH plugin.

If you are not currently blogging, or haven’t taken it too serious, now is the time to reevaluate your situation.    With this new technology comes the dark side. Luke I’m your father, er, no, it has already been suggested that spammers will try to take over this new technology. So, Google has suggested that it will filter these new feeds built on a trust factor. Now is the time to start building a community built on trust and a solid reputation.

And when this new technology has taken hold, you can sit back and say let the avatars fly!
